For the following products:

  • Wine Label version 1.0 - 1.6
  • Beer Label version 1.0 - 1.2
  • WinLabel version 2.0

These are the issues:

For the following products:

  • Wine Label Version 2
  • Classic Studio Version 3
  • TableWare Version 3
  • LabelWare PRO Version 3

These are the issues:

Problem: The program "freezes" during installation.

Explanation: If your computer "freezes" during installation, you may have an incompatible video driver. This is most common with ATI Mock 32 drivers, Triton TVGA, Compaq 6L5424 and Serius Logic.

Suggestion 1: Delete all old Temporary files. Make sure you are NOT running any programs (except Windows) when you do this. Temporary files are located in two places on your system:

  1. C:\TEMP
  2. C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

Delete all *.TMP files in these two folders. This should be done on a regular basis (every week) to keep your system free of interferance.

Suggestion 2: Try changing the video driver to VGA:

  1. Select My Computer from Windows 95
  2. Select System
  3. Select the Device Manager tab
  4. Select Display Adapters (double click)
  5. Select the Driver File that appears (double click)
  6. Select the Driver tab
  7. Select the Change Driver button
  8. Select Show all devices
  9. Select Standard Display Types from the Manufacturers window
  10. Select VGA from the Models window
  11. Click OK

After you have installed the program you may be able to change back to your old driver (same process as above), and run the program successfully.

Problem: My system "freezes" on the Wine Label box when I try to run it.

Explanation: If your computer "freezes" when you try to run the program, after a successful installation, you may have an incompatible video driver.

  7. Select the Change Driver button.
  8. Select Show all devices.
  9. Select Standard Display Types from the Manufacturers window
  10. Select VGA from the Models window
  11. Click OK

Suggestion 3: Try renaming the file called startup.BMP to old.old. This file is located in the c:\winelbl folder.

Problem: The program is very slow Installing, or is not Running quick enough.

Explanation: If your program is taking a long time to install (i.e. hours), or is running very slowly, you may not have sufficient system capabilities to run the program.

System requirements are:

  • PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1, 95 or NT.
  • 486-50 processor or better
  • 4 MB available hard disk space
  • 8 MB RAM
  • 3 1/2" floppy drive or CD-ROM drive
  • Windows Compatible pointing device
  • Windows Compatible laser, inkjet or dot matrix printer

Suggestion: A system upgrade or replacement may be required to run the Wine Label program.

Problem: I get an error message when using the program.

Explanation: Temporary files (created by most programs while running) may still be on your system and may be conflicting or causing interference with the Wine Label program.

Suggestion: Delete all old Temporary files.

Problem: My printer will only print one (1) copy at a time.

Explanation: If you can only get one copy at a time, regardless of how many copies you request in the Print dialog box, your printer driver may be incompatible. This is most common with Canon Bubble Jet printers.

Suggestion: Try switching the spooling setting to RAW from EMF. To do this:

  1. Select My Computer from Windows 95
  2. Select Printers
  3. Highlight the printer driver you are using
  4. Select File from the main menu
  5. Select Properties
  6. Select the Details Tab
  7. Select Spool Settings
  8. Change the spooling setting to RAW from EMF by using the drop down windows for Data format
  9. Click OK and try printing multiple copes from Wine Label

Problem: My printer misses the last bit of the page.

Explanation: If your printer cuts off, or misses the last ½ inch of printing on a page, your label design, and template exceed your printer's printable area (i.e. a margin around the page that is usually ½", where the printer will not print).

Suggestion: You may be able to trick your printer into printing on the last ½" of the page by changing the page size. To do this from wine Label:

  1. Select Printer Set-up from the Print Dialog Box
  2. Change the Paper size to 8 ½" x 14"
  3. Click OK and try printing

Problem: My labels are misaligned when I print.

Explanation: If your labels appear to be misaligned when you print, this may be caused by either:

  1. You may have a label sheet that is slightly imperfect. Due to printing and die cutting inaccuracies, your labels may be slightly off in size or alignment.
  2. You may need to calibrate your printer. Calibration positions the labels on the page properly, based on your printers physical capabilities.

Suggestion: You can manually adjust the sheet template to accommodate for manufacturer's inconsistencies. To do this:

  1. Choose Sheet/Setup...from the File menu
  2. Measure the actual parameters of the sheet you are working with.
  3. Define the actual settings for your label sheet in the Sheet Setup window by changing the following measurements:
    • First Label Left - the distance from the left edge of the label sheet to the left edge of the first label.
    • First Label Top - the distance (you may switch measurement units in the main menu) from the top edge of the label sheet to the top edge of the first label.
    • Horizontal/Vertical Space Between Labels - the space between each label across / down the page. For example, if stickers are touching then space is 0.00.
    • Label Height / Width - exact height / width of a label to its edges. This measurement is very important. Small errors are multiplied by the number of labels down / across the page so accurate measurement is required.

NOTE: You may want to save this new sheet template for future use. Select file.Sheet Save.

To calibrate your printer automatically:

  1. Click the Calculate Offset button from the Print dialog box
  2. Wine LABEL retrieves the exact printer offsets from your system for the current default printer.

To calibrate your printer manually:

  1. Click the Printer Setup button from the Print dialog box.
  2. Make sure the correct printer is selected and the correct page size and orientation are set. Click OK.
  3. Click the Print Calibration Sheet button from the Print dialog box. Wine LABEL will print a calibration sheet. ( a sheet with small lines near the edge of the page)
  4. Measure the vertical and horizontal offsets from the edge of the page and input these numbers into the appropriate text boxes on the Print Labels dialog.

NOTE: If you do need to manually calibrate for your printer, you must enter these measurement numbers each time you print from Wine Label, as the values are not saved.

Problem: My label doesn't print the same way it appears on the screen.

Explanation: If you label does not print the same way it appears on the screen (i.e. there are portions missing, or it is incomplete), you may not have sufficient memory in your printer. Most Wine Label files require at a least 1.5 MB RAM for 300 DPI on HP 2 or 3. You will require 6 MB RAM for 600 DPI on HP 4 or 5, Ink Jet and dot matrix printers should not have an issue with RAM requirements.

Suggestion: If you suspect your printer has insufficient memory capabilities, you can use the memory from your CPU by switching to RASTER MODE on most HP printers. To do this:

  1. Select My Computer from Windows 95
  2. Select Printers
  3. Highlight the printer driver you are using
  4. Select File from the main menu
  5. Select Properties
  6. Select the Graphics tab
  7. In the Graphics mode box (at bottom) select Use Raster Graphics
  8. Click OK, and try printing from Wine Label

NOTE: if you are using a OKIDATA printer, you may want to call the manufacturer for an updated printer driver, as the older ones can cause many problems.

Problem: I can't change the point size of the Font.

Explanation: Wine Label will always change the font size to fill the Text Block. The point size selection (i.e. 20 points) therefore becomes irrelevant.

Suggestion: Change your font size by changing the size of the text block. To do this, click on the block, and then drag the small black corners in or out until the font is the correct size.

Problem: How can I add French characters or other text symbols?

Suggestion: You can do this using the character map from your Windows accessories. To access this:

  1. Select Character map, from the Accessories folder in Windows
  2. Select the character font from the drop down menu (try System)
  3. Use the select button, and then the copy button to store the characters you want to use on your clip board OR note the key stroke required to call up the character
  4. Return to Wine Label and create a text block
  5. Use Control V to paste the symbols, OR use the appropriate key stroke

Problem: I can't find the Clipart that comes with the program.

Explanation: The clipart is located in a folder called c:\winelbl\clipart.

Suggestion: To access this file you must:

  1. Click on the graphic tool (mountain and Sun icon).
  2. Make a graphic frame on the label by clicking and dragging the mouse until the desired size is reached.
  3. Locate the clipart folder from the Directories Window. You must then Double click on a folder to open it. Wine Label's clipart is located in the c:\winelbl\clipart folder.
  4. A list of graphic files will then appear in the files .. Box. Select a graphic. You can view it in the Preview window and click OK to import it.

Problem: I can't import Compressed TIF, or GIF graphic files.

Explanation: The Wine Label program does not support compressed TIF, or GIF graphic files, as these file types are proprietary to Unisys and require Royalty agreements.

Suggestion: Use only supported file type which are:

  • WMF
  • BMP
  • TIF (uncompressed)
  • PCX
  • DIB
  • JPG
  • TGA

OR, you can use another program to "hijack" the proprietary clipart format, and export it as a supported type (listed above).

Problem: How can I Cut and Paste?

Suggestion: To Cut and Paste from another program into Wine Label use the following short cut keys:

  • Control C - Copy
  • Control V - Paste
  • Control X - Cut

To Copy and Paste from within the Wine Label Program, use the Duplicate function from the Edit menu.

Problem: I have reached maximum installs on my Floppy disk.

Explanation: If you have loaded the program several times, and are now getting a message that you have reached the maximum installs, then you have exceed the number of installs allowed by the programs security feature.

Suggestion: If you are a registered user, and you have not installed the software on any other machines, you may receive a replacement copy from LabelWare Computing. Call (403) 686-6619 or e-mail info@labelware.ca for replacement.

Problem: I can't add text to the label

Suggestion: Follow these directions EXACTLY:

  1. Click on the text tool once. It will become lighter gray to indicate it is active. The cursor will turn into a cross hair
  2. Position the crosshair on the label
  3. Click and hold down the mouse button
  4. Drag the mouse to the right and down. A dotted box will appear
  5. Release the mouse button
  6. An input dialog will appear
  7. Type your text in here. Select Fonts, size, etc.
  8. Click OK to place the text on the label

Problem: The mouse pointer disappears when I am entering text, and does not reappear.

Explanation: If you have "Hide pointer while typing" enabled in the IntelliPoint mouse properties, the mouse pointer disappears when entering text in the text box.

Suggestion: If the mouse pointer does not reappear when you have finished entering text, disable the "Hide pointer while typing" option, found under the Visibility tab in the mouse control panel settings in Windows.

Problem: The Database Merge function does not work.

Explanation: LabelWare Pro and LabelWare Express both make use of the latest Microsoft database technology, MDAC. If you do not have MDAC installed on your system, or you have an old version, you will need to download and install both the DCOM and the MDAC programs, and then re-install the LabelWare program.

Suggestion: The latest release of MDAC can be downloaded from Microsoft. To ensure that MDAC functions properly, Microsoft recommends installing the latest DCOM upgrades PRIOR to installing MDAC. The required DCOM upgrades are also available from Microsoft for you to download and install.

  1. Select the proper DCOM upgrade to download based on your current operating system. NT 4.0 users must have installed NT Service Pack 3.0 or greater.
  2. Download the latest version of MDAC and install on your system. Windows 95/98/NT: go to Microsoft's MDAC Download Site
  3. Re-install "LabelWare"

Problem: When I import a BMP, JPEG or GIF graphic it has a black line across the bottom, both on the screen and when I print.

Explanation: This is a bug in the graphic control file that affects raster based images.

Suggestion: Download and Run the patch file: GIpatch.exe

Problem: Printing Problems

  • When I re-open a saved file, some of the text changes size and placement.
  • I can't print Multiple copies - Only one copy prints, no matter what I enter.
  • I can't print from other programs once Wine Label is open.
  • The Text prints out a different size/position than it appears on screen.

Users experiencing any of the above problems, please download and RUN this file: Wine LABEL Patch

Problem: When I try to print I get an error message saying "paper size does not match printer settings".

Explanation: The print driver paper size setting si different than the template you have selected to print from.

Suggestion: Select "Modify Template" from the File menu. Change paper description to "Letter". The select the "Set-up" button from the print dialog box, and make sure the paper size is also set at "Letter".

Problem: The first time I try to run the program an error message appears saying: "OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date" or "Unable to load or call external DLL".

Explanation: LabelWare's installation cannot re-name, or delete a DLL file that is being used by your system during the time of install. If you continue to run any other software (including a hidden program) after installing, but before you restart your system, the new DLL files may not properly transferred into the correct directory.

Suggestion: Make sure that NO OTHER PROGRAMS are running, including hidden applications like Norton Anti-virus or Office tool bars. Then re-install the program and allow it to restart your computer.

Problem: The program was working fine, but now it "freezes" right after the opening screen.

Suggestion: From Windows, Delete or Move any custom templates you have created. These are stored in the C:\program files\{application name}\templates\custom directory.

Problem: When I print, everything is mis-aligned by a few millimeters.

Explanation: The Horizontal and Vertical Offset values found in the Print Dialog are measurements provided by your printer driver software. These measurements indicate the distance that your printer is physically able to print from the edge of the printed page. It is important that these measurements are correct, otherwise, your labels may be shifted on the sheet of labels.

Suggestion 1: To ensure the offset measurements are correct, enter a blank piece of paper in your printer and click the Test Page button. The horizontal and vertical offset measurements are represented by a border around the perimeter of the page. This border indicates the printing boundaries. To change the offset measurements, you need to manually measure the distance from the edge of the page to where you want the printer to begin printing (i.e. where the test border was printed). Enter these numbers in the Horizontal and Vertical Offset text boxes. If you have changed these numbers but want to return to the original numbers provided by your printer driver software, click the Reset button. Repeat this for both Portrait and Landscape printing.

Suggestion 2: Disable "MS Office Quickstart toolbar" or "Office Assistant" and reboot your system.

Problem: The program won't display background images.

Explanation: You may have a missing .DLL file. LabelWare's installation cannot rename, or delete a DLL file that is being used by your system during the time of install. If you continue to run any other software (including a hidden program) after installing, before you restart your machine, the DLL file is not properly transferred into the correct directory.

Suggestion: Make sure that NO OTHER PROGRAMS are running , including hidden applications like Norton Anti-virus or Office tool bars. Then re-install the program and allow it to restart your computer.

Problem: The background image on the label does not print.

Explanation: When a pre-printed template is selected (pre-printed templates included 4th & Vine, Classic Studio, and Husky pre-printed card), a background image is displayed on your screen. The background image is meant to serve as a reference, to help you place text and graphics on "PRE-PRINTED" material, and let you view your layout before it is printed. Only the text, graphics, and shapes that you add will be printed, as the background image has already been pre-printed on the material you have purchased.

Suggestion 1: To work with pre-printed templates, you will need to purchase the "PRE-PRINTED" material designed for use with your software. See the README.TXT within your program for more information on how to purchase these.

Suggestion 2: Select "PRINTABLE" templates (if offered in your software) to design and print everything onto blank paper, using your own colour printer.

Suggestion 3: Use Clipart graphics supplied with your software, or import your own clipart to create a label design that is "fully" printable. To add a Clipart graphic to your label:

  1. Click the Graphics Tool button on the toolbar (Cactus and Sun Tool)
  2. Click and drag a graphic block on the label. Don't be concerned about the location and size of the block at this time: it can be moved and resized later.
  3. The File Names list box displays the list clipart located in the \Clipart\ directory. To add one of these graphics to your label, simply select the desired file. To add your own graphic, select the drive, directory, file type, and file. Your LabelWare software supports WMF, BMP, GIF and JPEG file types.
  4. Click OK to add the graphic to your label.

Problem: How can I add a letter with an accent?

Explanation: Windows treats accented characters as "symbols" which are created using "key Strokes".

Suggestion: To add a symbol to your label, use the Character map found in your Windows Accessories programs, to determine the "key stroke" required for the symbol or Accented letter you wan tot use. Then return to Your LabelWare software, create a text object, and use the "key Stroke" to add the symbol right into your text.

Problem: How do I uninstall the program?

Explanation: LabelWare Software uses standard Microsoft Uninstall procedure.

Suggestion: To Uninstall any LabelWare program:

  1. Select the Add/Remove Icon from the Windows Control Panel
  2. Select the program you wish to uninstall
  3. Click Add/remove button

NOTE: this will only uninstall the files that were originally installed with your program. It will not remove new files you have created, such as label files, or custom template files.

Problem: When I select "Print Proof", the print-out of the label runs together with the approval copy.

Suggestion: Make sure that you always have the proof sheet orientation selected as "PORTRAIT" from within the Print dialog, regardless of the label's particular orientation.

Problem: When I select "Print Proof" I get an error message saying "Data required by printer driver cannot be found or is corrupted" restart Windows.

Explanation: You may not have the latest drivers for your printer.

Suggestion: Download the latest drivers for your printer from your printer manufacturer's web site.

Problem: I get an error message when I try to submit my Registration using Netscape.

Explanation: MS Internet Explorer and Outlook Express require a different MAP32.DLL file than the corresponding Netscape Communicator Suite of applications. This causes a problem.

Suggestion: If you are using Netscape, and are unable to send you registration via e-mail, please choose the option to Print for fax or Mail submission.

Problem: How do I add text or clipart to the label.

Explanation: Your LabelWare software uses an object-based format, with all text, shapes, and graphics referred to as objects. Use any number of objects in any combination. Once you have selected your template, you can:

  • Add text to your label
  • Add shapes to your label
  • Add graphics to your label
  • Edit and delete objects
  • Position and size objects
  • Layer objects

To reposition any object on the label, click the block and drag it to the new location. To resize the object, click the block, then drag one of the block's corners or side handles to a new size.

Suggestion: To add text to your label:

  1. Click either the Single-line or multi-line Text button on the toolbar.
  2. Click and drag a text block on the label. Don't be concerned about the location and size of the text block at this time: it can be moved and resized later.
  3. In the Text Properties dialog box, type the text you want displayed on the label.
  4. Refer to the Help documentation within your program for more explanation on setting text properties.
  5. Click OK to place text on your label.

Suggestion: To add Graphics to your label:

  1. Click the Graphics button on the toolbar (cactus & sun picture)
  2. Click and drag a graphic block on the label. Don't be concerned about the location and size of the block at this time: it can be moved and resized later
  3. The File Names list box displays the list of wine LABEL clipart located in the Clipart\ directory within your program directory. To add one of these graphics to your label, simply select the desired file. To add your own graphic, select the drive, directory, file type, and file
  4. To preview the selected graphic, select the Preview check box
  5. Click OK to add the graphic to your label

Problem: I can't place text in the right side of the Jasmine Label.

Explanation: Since this label exceeds the printable area of most printers, the margin setting has been increased to stop you from entering text in an unprintable area, and then having it "cut-off" in printing.

Problem: When I print to Classic Studio labels 40038 and 40040 the text comes out "upside down".

Explanation: These labels have been manufactured differently that other Classic Studio Labels.

Suggestion: Feed these labels into your printer from the bottom end first.

Problem: How do I import a graphic that I scanned or other clipart, etc.

Explanation: All LabelWare program ship with a clipart gallery f specially selected graphics. However, you can also import your own graphics in formats including wmf, bmp, gif, and jpg.

Suggestion: To add your own graphic to your label:

  1. Click the Graphics button on the toolbar (tool bar button with Cactus and Sun picture)
  2. Click and drag a graphic block on the label. Don't be concerned about the location and size of the block at this time: it can be moved and resized later
  3. The Import Image dialog box will automatically appear. The file names list displays the list of LabelWare's clipart. To add your own graphic, select the drive, directory, file type, and file that you want to import. REMEMBER, LabelWare supports files in WMF, BMP, GIF and JPG formats only
  4. Click OK to add the graphic to your label
